I once had an entire batch come in this way.  The molded "+" and "-" was wrong on the battery top but the positive terminal was correctly painted red. 

I went ahead and installed 8 of these for a customer.  They were shot within 2 or 3 months. 

It appeared that they were charged backwards and the plate chemistry did not support this.

Dear folks:

I am installing a new set of sixteen Surrette/Rolls S530 batteries in our
home office system, and very quickly discovered one battery mislabelled--the
polarity is reversed. There were no fireworks thank goodness, but be sure
you test each battery before you assume anything!
