The problem can also be caused by uneven heating of the roof.  I lived in an 
off-grid house for eight years.  It too suffered creaks and groans such as you 
describe, but mostly on warm, sunny days.  Noise wasn't a problem during the 
winter or in cloudy weather.  The issue was resolved when the PV were moved off 
the roof and put on pole-mounts (for reasons other than the noise issue.)  We 
know it was roof temperature and not the racking because on close scrutiny over 
many weeks, we found the noise originated in areas of the roof exposed to the 
sun, away from the PV.  Loosening the PV clamps and letting the PV free-float 
on the racking had no effect on the noise.  Shading the exposed areas of the 
roof with large flats of cardboard and all was quiet again.
