Will,
Many old-timers have long known that Delta lightning arrestors don't actually work to address most surges. They were first used in a product package by Ananda Power Technologies (APT), who made the first listed powercenters, and thus became the de facto standard for including basic surge protection in a system. We used them for years in our off grid systems, as an inexpensive way to address the issue when nothing else in the same low price range was available. Now that Midnite makes a better replacement at not much higher cost, the Deltas are pretty much history for our applications.

We use the LA302R for AC and LA602DC for the DC side.  I don’t think I’ve ever had one of them struck so I can’t say how well they actually work.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Surge Protection- PV

Hi folks

What kinds of products are you using for residential and commercial surge protection for your PV systems?

Have a few clients that have been asking.

Is it at the service, using products like this:

I always wonder what it protects and the fine print in the event of a lightning storm to someone hitting a pole on the street and sending the surge back into the property.

Aloha,

Keith
