I don't know the answer to this, as I don't work enough with wind.
My reason for writing is only this: if worse comes to worst and
the other controller smokes, I have a 500-watt Whisper 500 Mariner
and the original EZ-Wire Center and tower kit.
This is a set from around 1997 that was in service for a few years
and then taken down, so it's functionally in nearly new condition.
I bought it with the rest of the home PV system around 2001 and
have stored it since then, thinking I'd set it up at my home some
day, but I never will. The old controller was quite basic - caps
and diodes and a digital display, mostly, along with a matching
dump load, which would be too small for a 200 but I believe could
be used with the larger dump. The whole setup is missing the
blades, which were lost in a fire. I'd sell it all cheap if it
serves you.

Hello wrenches,
Yesterday, we converted a Whisper 200 over from 24V to 48V
operation. We lowered the turbine and rewired it. We set the
Dip switches in the controller (1 & 2 to off) and rewired
the dump load as specified in the manual. For some reason,
when we put the 55V battery voltage to the controller, it
smoked it. We triple checked all of our connections and
settings. Everything looks like the manual specifies.
Luckily for us, we happen to have a spare Whisper
controller that I can give this guy. If it was a fluke and
the controller just had a bad component, fine, no problem.
However, I'd like to know if I'm missing something about the
48VDC conversion before we smoke another one. Are there known
issues, operating this controller at 48V?
Any insights are appreciated. Thanks, in advance.
