Esteemed Wrenches; I have tested the SolarShades app against a Solar Pathfinder, and the app is great for a quick assessment. Unfortunately accuracy depends on how you hold your phone and rotate yourself and especially how you tilt it. If you do it exactly right, I found the accuracy to be within 5-10% of the pathfinder. But the app relies on the tilt sensor of the smartphone, so if you move your arms up or down while rotating yourself to keep the crosshairs on target of obstructions as you rotate, it ruins the reading (and you can see it in the generated sunpath diagram)---but after much practice I kind of have the hang of it.
If someone could devise an android phone holder bracket that could be used on a tilt/pan tripod, I think the SolarShades app could be very accurate. Also, I believe there is a similar app for Iphone, Solarshades only works on android last time I checked.
