Andrew:

For years we used the tap test to get close (hammer gently on the roof,
listening for solid sound. Move up and down a course or two if needed.)
After the tap test, we drill a 1/8 hole and inserted a bent landscape flag
wire and rotate it, feeling for contact with the side of the rafter. Then
someone improved on the idea and invented the tool linked below.

This has proven to be a great tool. I highly recommend it. It still
requires the tap test to get in the general vicinity.

BTW, everyone on the crew has their own color of lumber crayon used to
circle every pilot hole to indicate they own it. This really encourages
being responsible to ensure the pilot hole is under the flashing and gets
sealed. If a pilot hole is drilled that will not be covered by the
flashing, we take a cut off upper shingle tab and slip it under the course
with the pilot hole and squirt some caulk through the hole.

35 years in the industry and only one roof leak.

You would have to have a serious heat differential from inside to outside
for that too work. And it still wouldn't get you closer than a hammer.
Also, most attics are ventilated so they would be close to the outside temp
anyway. Usually the insulation is on the ceiling not under the roof.

On a cold night with a vaulted ceiling is the only time it "might" work.

We have spent a lifetime hoping, searching, dreaming of an easy and

P.S. We are well aware of how inexpensive hammers are!
