What about Midnight SPDs?

I am not seeing how ferrites can stop EMP. The frequencies involved will affect
diode junction level electronics.
Ferrites may lessen the induced surge picked up by the conductors between the
array and the inverter/charge controller, but unless the electronics are
hardened too, I don’t believe it.

Hans,

Here is a split ferrite kit (various sizes) from [ Mouser.com ](
http://Mouser.com ):

[
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Laird-Performance-Materials/K-404-EMI-A-LG?qs=GedFDFLaBXEg9IWU3Su8DQ%3D%3D
 ](
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Laird-Performance-Materials/K-404-EMI-A-LG?qs=GedFDFLaBXEg9IWU3Su8DQ==
 )

Sol-Ark makes an EMP hardened inverter and that kit comes with ferrite cores
for each solar panel. Both normal and EMP version come with ferrite cores for
the battery cables, Schnieder 600V solar charge controllers comes with cores
and older inverters also came with cores. so, it seems cores are good even for
regular systems, such as to combat back EMF from larger motor loads / inductive
loads.

So, the bottom line is that is helpful to block line surges by using ferrite
cores to suppress voltage spikes & surges. And like lightning, you can do the
best that you can do and too many parameters can guarantee anything.

I going to investigate further and make kits for my own customers.

Good luck!

Maverick

Wrenches,

One of our grid-tied solar + storage customers with a SolarEdge StorEdge / LG
Chem RESU10H system found some information online about protecting solar
systems from an EMP:

[ Solar Power Ferrite Bundle – Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family
(disasterpreparer.com) ](
https://disasterpreparer.com/product/solar-ferrite-bundle/ )

Our customer is asking for our recommendation on this. We have used Ferrites
for filtering out inverter noise but I’m not familiar with the idea of using
them for protection from EMPs. Does anyone on this group specify or recommend
these sorts of products for that purpose? Is there any historical evidence of
EMPs being a threat to solar systems?

Thanks,
