There are very good roof mounting systems that do not require finding
the rafter. There was a thread on this within the past two weeks. I
understand the comfort of lagging into a rafter, but unless you can see
the rafters from below, you'll never know 100% you did not come out the
side of the rafter, especially if the rafter is checked. We use the
hammer, two pilot holes to establish the rafter edge if we are attaching
to the rafter. That is a cool tool though that I never saw before. Chris

Hi Kris,
I started using the Bosch D-tect 150 a few years ago after a friend
who had success with it recommended it. Works great on most roofs.
It needs a smooth surface to roll on so I use a piece of Soladeck
box. Older roofs with ply over roof boards don't scan very well so I
sometimes go back to the mallet method.
I also highly recommend the Chip Tool! Every installer should have
one. It's best use in my opinion is for installing fall protection.
I don't recommend it be used with a "micro flashing" though, as the
pilot hole next to the rafter may only be barely covered by the
"flashing".
