Ah, okay, that's a bit of a surprise, and as you say, can render Terminal useless.
OS X is a little different, but certainly under OS 9, Monaco, Courier, Geneva and Chicago were essential, otherwise various parts of the system and applications could fall over. In general of course it's also a good idea to leave the relevant system font alone too: Chicago for early OSes, Charcoal, and Lucida Grande for X. It's wise to have a least one monospaced font for stuff to default to.
