Thanks Jon for the answer.
Even thought, this is far beyong my understanding, I simply get the
message that it's after all not that simple in the "full length project".
Is there any plan for handheld devices support?
Cheers,
Youri

I just read yesterday an old issue (March 2003) of the excellent "RB
Developer" magazine, in which Joe Strout was saying that given the
structure of the new compiler (2 layers or something like it),
creating a compiler for any different platform would take just few
weeks, independently of the processor.
There are many factors that influence how long it takes to port to
another platform. Assuming that we had decided to port to that platform
(which is the very first step we would have to make) the things that
must be updated are:
- Supporting the target CPU in the compiler, which as Joe noted, would
probably only take a few weeks.
- Linking the executable in the format the target OS expects, which is
no simple task, especially if working with a sparsely documented format.
- Porting the framework to the target system. This is the most time
consuming, as it involves updating all of the internal code to use new
APIs that are available on that platform.
So, while the compiler is about as easy to update as it could be, it can
still be a lengthy process to achieve.
