Hi Terry,

First, sorry for the bonehead move and not changing the subject...

If you can afford REALbasic, you can afford...

I bought RealBasic Pro - my budget is shot for a while. :-)

And besides I could have used the product and not paid. The author is quite kind about that - I pay for what I use.

I did take a quick look at those and a few others. The real issue is all I need is a single editfield with a simple set of instructions. Just one scrollable page. I don't need clickable topics and sub topics, et al. The plain text I had looked weak, just adding some style is all it needed. I asked if anyone had such an editor but no one responded yes. So I wrote my own.

I really haven't been known for praising RB and RS. My first several projects went to hell after spending several months on them because of some limitation or bug in RB. I've pretty much regretted my purchase because of this. I've had my tantrums on this list in the past too. What can I say? In order to get my moneys worth I've learned to 'live' with RB, in the sense that I've come to understand what it is and what it isn't. Once you've accepted the boundaries and plan to stay within them, RB is a fine product. The reason I'm saying this is, I sat down, and in four hours I built a very nice interface and a fully working text editor. It loads and saves, has full cut, copy, and paste functionality. Text tools include alignment, color , font, size, and style. I even built a ruler in Photoshop for it. The editfield size is also editable. The only issue I'm having is paragraph id (see previous post). I've already finished my instruction text, it looks great, just what I wanted. I've been putting this off thinking I was going to have to take one of those 'detours off your project' just so you can finish your project, things. I expected to bumble through an editor in three or four days. This is where I have to give RB it's due. I was amazed that I had a fully functional editor in a single sitting. So RB, maybe your not so bad after all, as long as you color within the lines, you can do some pretty amazing stuff and in a short time.

Anyways, thanks to all who responded.

Craig

Thanks for the reply Terry,

Call me Goldielocks, the turtorial is a bit weak with no alignment
capabilities and Tex-Edit Plus is a bit much and it has a cost
(which the author is great about and states that you can use and
not pay- That's a first for me), if I use I pay and I'm not sure if
the output can be loaded into a styled editField. I'm really
looking for an example that can load styled text in RB native
format - whatever that is. There is an example for styled text that
has a styledrun parser that I was hoping to utilize. Seems like
someone out there would have built an editor that has all the usual
features, alignment, font, size, style, color. Looks like I'm
building my own.

If you can afford REALbasic, you can afford either Tex-Edit Plus
($15) or Simple Help Editor ($25).

The features of Tex-Edit Plus are well known throughout the Mac
world. I have also just downloaded Simple Help Editor (demo) and see
it is more geared towards creating a Help file than a general Text
Editor for creating simple files.

The Tutorial is *very* old and doesn't use all of the current
features in the REALbasic editfield. For example, Alignment is not
included as there is still an issue with Mac when is comes to
printing out the editfield. It does work on Windows however. If all
you are interested is a way to save text files with styled text with
built-in left, center or right alignment then the Rb Editfield in the
Tutorial can do it and display it on-screen.

If you want indent Tabs, that are simple space distances, then the
Tutorial can be modified to do it. If you need adjustable Tabs, you
are out of luck in most simple Text Editors.

You didn't state the platform you are working on but I assume it is Mac.
