Uploading Mac-intended software in Stuffit format, will the end user get any problem expanding a .sitx file instead of a more common .sit file?

Don't use StuffIt at all. Seriously. *at all*

Mac OS X 10.4 and later do not ship with StuffIt and it's a hell of a process to download it. There's no benefit to using StuffIt that outweighs the annoyance of having to download and install it. Use a format that 10.4 can expand on its own (ie .zip) because it doesn't require any installation at all, and those that alread StuffIt Expander on earlier OSes that don't expand files (10.2-) can still expand those same files.

It's nothing but hassle and cost for everyone all to save a few percentage points on compression.
