They should be substantially faster than VB, at least (I don't know as much about FB). I'd like to see that shell sort code that is 18X faster. The only reason I can think of that this might be is that you're sorting strings, and RB's string comparison feature is substantially more sophisticated (and by necessity slower) than VB's, which may be doing a simple binary comparison. If it's integers or doubles you're sorting, then I'd be *really* curious what's going on.
