What is the draw to REALbasic? Is it cross-platform? Is it rich
framework? Is it easy to learn?
I'd like to know why everyone is using REALbasic. There are other
tools out there. There are other languages out there. Why REALbasic?
Long answer:
1. Cross-platform. Not perfect, but as good as could be expected
given inherent platform differences. Sure, Cocoa looks great, but I
need to support Windows. And yeah, VB looks fine, but I need to
support Macs. The Linux support is just a bonus as far as I'm
concerned. In fact, the other day on a whim, I compiled one my
utility apps for Linux and it worked great!
2. Easy language. If I can do it, anybody can do it. 'Nuff said.
3. Great company. If you don't know the folks from RS, get your butt
to REAL World and spend some time with them. Doing that has given me
an even greater appreciation for REALbasic.
4. Database access. This is what I do. Databases are my thing.
REALbasic allows me to write great database apps that look and behave
like real, honest-to-goodness apps instead of some half-native
abomination hobbled together in FileMaker or 4D.
5. Stability. I can count on one hand the number of times REALbasic
has crashed on me in the past few months. I know some others have had
different experiences, but it certainly isn't a universal problem.
Short answer:
It's the *only* tool that does what I need, and it does it extremely
well.
