I agree with Norman here (though I have to say it took the Windows solution a LONG time to be a viable solution). VB really took off after Crystal Reports appeared and made it relevant to corporations outside of writing some utilities in the IT department. I have yet to see or read of a demonstration of RB working with Crystal Reports or any other major 3rd party component that has already achieved critical mass in the enterprise. Many companies care more about their existing reporting systems than Visual Basic so this is a critical barrier to entry. BTW and to be absolutely clear about this - Ive harped on a good, open third party development program and its totally fallen on deaf ears. I guess REAL has no interest in it, at least not enough to respond to email. This isnt about technology, its about business development. For some reason tool vendors tend to have a poor grasp on the "human" side of business. You cant solve marketing problems with engineering - and it's the marketing that paves the way to revenue (you cant have a totally crap product either of course). If there is one lesson that doesn't seem to sink in with a lot of companies is that superior technology is trumped by strategy. This is a key reason why Valentina ODBC is on its way. ODBC is a lame way to interact with Valentina but it establishes a commonality/validation with the enterprise by removing a barrier to entry. Its not a substitution for marketing but it enables marketing.
