Dennis teaches me that my thinking about an instance and a class is
somehow muddled.
Karen taught me that my attempt to maintain the containing window as
a property of the canvas was silly because a reference already
existed. That allows me to clean up a lot of my code elsewhere.
The word "casting" only rung a distant bell when mentioned by Jack.
So I went to read about it in the User's Guide and get a vague
understanding of what it is.
I have a hard time understanding that the window I am designing (and
putting things like StaticText1 inside) is an object class rather
than an instance of a window, but perhaps someday it will be second
nature for me to understand completely the difference between an
instance and a class.
But with Jack's example code, I get get it to work for me.

A few sentences from these three got this novice across a swamp and
the help appreciated and I learned a lot though I admit I remain a
little confused.
But my code works :)
Thanks. A great return on my question.
