I have experienced this a couple of times, been too busy to narrow it
down due to difficulty in gathering evidence.
I also thought that maybe my 1.5GH G4 with just 1.25GB RAM was
underpowered for RB200x.
How big an app and, in particular, do you have any classes with a
significant number of methods, say more than 50?
There may be a correlation between a non-linear performance hit and
the number of methods in a single class.
Are you using separate windows?
Are you editing with both the layout and code views on a given window
open?
What has been your debugging pattern recently and have you killed any
sessions or had crashes? I suspect this leaves stuff hanging around,
possibly just taking up RAM but maybe also linked into some active
dependencies in the IDE.
Try running an ssh in from your PC so you can run top, vm_stat or
other reporting tools on it with minimal overhead and not involving
the graphical output of the Mac. (For those who don't know, this
requires installing a free client such as WinSSH and turning on
Remote Login on your System Prefs - Sharing - Services panel.)
Hope this helps.
