I understand this. Any program, by linking to a GPL interface library,
is expanding its own functionality and without said interface library
that program would not have that functionality. The person who wrote
the code that provides the interface library made it GPL for the exact
fact that they only wanted similar GLP code to link to it. "Derivative
work" is just legalese that expresses that desire.
