I'am glad it helped. The LR is a little confusing as Navdeep wrote in
his answer. It should read something like"if you don't start with a
begin transaction the realsql-database-engine will wrap every individual
change to the database automatically in a begin/end transaction
construction. And as you have been seeing that takes a lot more time.

Bingo! I added the "begin transaction" to my original code and the
150K lines now imports (including the paths table insert and lookup)
in just over 28 seconds on my Power Book!!!
