Hi Tom,

OK, I should have been more specific. For my purposes, Valentina is
more expensive.

All of my solutions are based on a centralised server, infinite
client premise.

MySQL can provide this for 250 Euro. As far as I can tell Valentina
costs US$1500 for the same scope of license.

If I'm wrong, please tell me, but that is how I interpret the pricing
as laid out at http://www.paradigmasoft.com/en/store/business/VSRV.

Add to that the fact there are so many different variations of
Valentina (5 Different 'Editions' each with 5 or more different
options) and I find it all thoroughly confusing, though less so that
the GPL. I'd rather just tack 250 Euro onto my prices (which they
discount if you buy in blocks of ten or more, by the way) and use
MySQL. It's just me though.

Valentina wins hands down for single user, embedded server type
stuff. If I ever found a need for an embedded server, I'd try
Valentina over the built in RS option any day, but my work does not
lean in that direction.

We are looking at ways to simplify licensing - the problem with that though
is that we have customers who need a particular configuration that we offer.

Valentina Embedded Server in its default state is royalty free. The Embedded
Infinite Server, which is per deployment, is $400. Just based on this you
might assume that we are more expensive. However while your subscription is
good with us, your deployables are also upgraded/updated at the same time.

There are some differences between Embedded Server and Office Server. For
one, Embedded Server does not have built in support for all other scripting
languages and doesnt automatically get various adapters. We are just
updating offerings on that, and with VDN Pro, Embedded Server will also gain
PHP and Ruby support - SSL and Bonjour are optional (but included with
Enterprise). With Embedded Server, you are also supporting your customers.
With an Office Server license, support falls on Paradigma since its an "off
the shelf" solution.

So lets say you give your customer an Infinite this year on a new
subscription. Over the course of the next two years, we update Embedded
Server. You can offer that update to your customer at no additional cost or
you can charge them for it.

REALbasic developers can get up and running quickly with our open source
data-binding framework for REALbasic and VDN Platform - that lets you deploy
that default Embedded Server royalty free.

VDN Professional gains PHP, Ruby, C++ Extended ADK AND the new Valentina
ODBC driver. The new ODBC driver is great for integration with other tools
that can leverage it - Excel, Crystal Reports and the like.

To either Platform or Professional, you can get the optional adapters for
Bonjour and SSL (which you can deploy with any of your Valentina Embedded
solutions, royalty free). These are included with VDN Enterprise.

mySQL's approach is force developers to call and negotiate (which you pretty
much have to do since their license leaves few other options), or pay a very
steep price for just a serial code. They wont drop their price much lower
than Valentina, and they give you even less once you work out exactly what
you are getting. I guess this is a sharp business practice but it doesnt
strike me as an open and honest way of working with customers.

Best regards,
