For simplicity, your accessment is correct, most websites are flash, but there 
is still room for good java applets not much tho.

Personally, when I develop for the web, I stay away from java applets.         

Most web interfaces can be done in flash, it gives a greater control on gui 
design...

Just my impression, but I get the feeling that most web pages seem to use
just  JavaScript and Flash, pure java applets seem to be getting rarer. Is
