I am fairly familiar with Christian's work.
It seems that he has the cal to set the window's alpha, but that's a
one liner in a Declare. What I am looking for is a bit more
complicated - creating a custom shaped window. I have code that does
this, but I'm baffled with the "C world" of effort to implement this
in RB.

The problem I always run into with 3rd party plugins is when there
is a conflict that disables two plugins working together and you
are left at a stand-still. I've been in the "buyer beware" mode
too many times, but for the most part I would rather that they
sold a dylib/dll and a set of declares to use them. I realizes
that a compiled plugin is safer for the plugin vendor, but we all
frequently have to deal with what is best for the customer is not
always what is best for the vendor.
The real benefit of a dylib/dll solution is that it is many times
a drop-in replacement to a compiled project rather than a
recompile from RB.
No offense against the plugin vendors out there - I have had good
experiences too - Einhugur is a really good example of a set of
plugins I will never go without.
I'm working on the weekend, and I am not in the mood to be flamed

I completely agree with the recommendation for the Einhugur
plugins, excellent excellent stuff! But you really should have a
look at the MBS plugins too. Christian has his namespace all
figured out and I've not ever had any trouble with them co-existing
with other plugins or anything like that. I use them constantly
and really couldn't live without them. I still do a huge amount of
work with declares, but it's worth the money for the plugin for
other things that aren't that easy to either figure out or to
implement without access to lower level structures.
Have a look through his documentation and you'll find at least a
hundred things you've been meaning to figure out how to do made
simpler ;)
Cheers,
James
