Hi John,
I have just purchased a 2.1Ghz iMac to replace a dual 2.7Ghz G5. I
was expecting to experience no real improvement. However, I was
pleasantly surprised.
The difference between the two is amazing. I estimate at least a 40%
increase in compile speed. The G5 really is starting to show its age,
although i never really thought the G5 was too slow.
The test project source code is about 220 A4 pages of 9 pt text
(about 2.5Mb file size), so it is large enough to run a fair test.
The project compiles in 10 seconds on the G5, and 6 seconds on the
iMac (from clicking the Build button to having the compiled app shown
in Finder).
The project runs in 8.5 seconds on the G5, and 5 seconds on the iMac
(from cmd-R to application running)
I also have a 1.5Ghz G4 PowerBook which I find too slow and tedious
for the project. The PB took 17 seconds to run the project - too long
for me compared to the other machines. This PB is only used for small
apps.
Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the intel iMac.
I also just brought a MacBook 2Ghz. I haven't installed RB on it yet,
but I don't expect it to be much different to the iMac, except for
screen real estate.
I hope this helps persuade you to take the plunge.
Cheers,
Gavin J Dimmock
