Since encodings shouldn't matter in this case since it's binary data, I would use a binary stream and be sure to use the "B" version of InStr and related calls as Charles used here. That should be faster.

One important element here for others that may be looking at this - Kevin's note about using the "B" versions of the various manipulators applies to AscB as well :-(. So make sure that you're using:

        AscB
        InStrB
        MidB
        LeftB
        RightB
        LenB

Otherwise, your results will be indeterminate at best and a very difficult to debug application crash at worst.
