Hi All,

I'm definitely glad that the mailing list is back up, as in many ways I think the UI of a mailing list is better for me and how I work.

HOWEVER, there is one big flaw as I see it -- the problem of reply- followups that change the thread topic.

My mail program (Apple Mail.app) threads messages based on an internal thread ID. Therefore, all replies to a message stay within that thread, even if the message subject changes. This is generally OK.

What's not OK though, is when people reply to an old message with the intent of starting a new thread -- in this case we end up with a brand new thread that's intermixed with the old one.

I realize one answer to this problem is "Don't do that!" but for many folks, it's just way easier to hit the "reply" button in their mail program than choosing "Create new message", Address to realbasic-nug, then create a subject, etc.

How do we solve this?

Here's one idea: What if the mailing list program was configured to automatically generate a new thread ID from any "reply to" message where the subject was changed? In other words, any time you changed the subject of an email thread it would automatically create a new thread.

Thoughts?
