You might try using a more standard image. Try PICT files for Mac and BMP files for Windows. These are standard image files for these platforms.
I don't even bother making masks for buttons. Just set the transparency property for the image and it seems to work fine. If I remember right, and if it's still the case with the 200X IDEs, I believe the images are converted to the standard OS image type anyway. Maybe there is an issue with the internal conversion. So, not forcing this conversion might make these issues go away. Worth a shot.
