This may be the same, longstanding bug with the shell class as well. There is a problem sending these same characters or getting them back from a shell script object. In my case this manifested itself when sending binary, not string, data back and forth. If it's true that non-ascii characters wont go through stdout, then it would be impossible to reliably return things like pictures or any other binary data type but plain text! Wow, that will put a kink into my plans for the coming weeks...
