This is creating a new, temporary string variable with a lifetime  
until the end of the DrawString.

More context needed.

My bet is that if you describe more of what is happening that we can  
work it out and it will turn out to be some combination of event  
order surprising you and the double-buffering effects of OS/X.

I just got a little reminder myself not to assume ANYTHING about  
event orders, with an OK button Action event firing before a  
LostFocus event on an edit field (OS/X).
