This happens to me all the time. In most cases, you can fix it this way: go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, and change the Audio Output format to 44100.0 Hz. However, my machine also often gets in a state where iChat sounds don't play, and the above doesn't fix that. So far, only a reboot seems to fix iChat for some reason.
