Paul, this is really strange and defies all explanation.  Usually when
I see things like that, it means that my code is doing something which
I just can't see, maybe not in the area I even believe to be involved.

In cases like that, I find the best approach is usually to try and
reproduce it in a small app.  The small app will work just as it
should, convincing you that it really is something in the big app
that's causing it.  Then you start comparing the two, stepping through
line by line to see what the difference is.  This usually flushes out
the problem in short order.
