AFAIK: If you try to write in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE the action will fail as long as the App is not running with Administrative Rights. Maybe you can associate the file extensions also in HKEY_CURRENT_USER ? The association will be limited to the User but this does'nt have to be a bad thing anyway...
