Thanks so far ... well, in my application I want to be able to  
perform some tasks as soon as a Mac is connected to the local  
network. That is why I want to monitor the local network. Installing  
an additional app and making holes into the firewall is not what I  
want to do ... so I think I will use the MBS plugins to listen to  
some common services such as file sharing, ichat ... and hope that  
it's my best bet.

But as Tom  already wrote: If there are no services running, I'll  
have no chance to discover the Mac.
