Personally, I use SharedDocuments for both Windows and Mac.

All it is is a way to "fill out" the matrix of special folders.  For  
example, on Linux there's no Preferences folder, so I provide one.  
Also, if I know that I'm going to want more than one file in  
Preferences, I can create a subfolder with the returned Preferences  
SpecialFolder on Mac and Windows.
