It used to be the case that a Timer, on a Mac, couldn't fire more than about 60 times per second, the rate of the event loop. (On Windows, I think the max was 100 Hz, but I'm not sure.)
But I've just discovered that this is no longer the case, at least in 2007R2. With a Period of 100, it fires at about 10 Hz as expected. With a Period of 10, it fires at almost 100 Hz. And with a period of 1, it's firing at over 500 Hz for me. I can see this as a feature, but it sure caught me by surprise, and worth pointing out in case anyone else didn't know about it yet.
