If you look at how most open source projects use forums, and mailing lists, forums are used more for solutions and less for discussion. Something might start in the mailing list, get solved, and then posted to the forums as a solution. Then some discussion might take place in the forums about it. That model has worked well for when I've needed help, and offered help.
