From: Jason Clary <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: High quality mpeg 2 to real Has anyone done any conversion from high/broadcast quality mpeg 2 to realvideo. We are starting to think that it might be cheaper in the long run for us to just encode everything mpeg2 (especially since we need it that way for dvd and other things anyway) and then convert it to real media and other formats as needed. I know Real doesn't recommend converting compressed video but the video we take off tape has already been mpeg2 compressed on digital tape formats and its incredibly good quality stuff. It seems to me that if we encode once as mpeg2 we'll never have to re-encode from tape in future if codecs change or (god forbid) microsoft or apple somehow take over Real's marketshare.. ;P This way I should be able to batch transcode from mpeg2 to whatever format/size/speed I need. And worst case, I could play it back on an mpeg board and encode it back in real on a capture card (The quality is still remarkably better than VHS on playback) The mpeg2 would, in effect, become the digital master that we use for all web compression. The alternative would be storing raw AVI which is terribly unweildy and takes up too much space (physically.. I could afford the storage system, but I'm not sure where I'd put it) Anyway.. comments? suggestions? We've got Media Cleaner Pro, which supposedly has an option, with hardware, to clean and convert from mpeg2 to real G2. I'm thinking that would be the way to go. Jason S.
