This could be a shot in the dark, but if you're getting "whirring" when
recording in stereo mode, that usually means that something in the audio
chain is out of phase and you are getting some frequencies that are
cancelling each other.

The problem could be in the wiring in your audio cables from your VCR to
computer or on tape itself if, it was recorded in a studio or make shift
studio that many of us have.

In any case either a cable(s) or connection has a positive point crossed to
a negative point or vise versa.


Or that may not be the problem at all and there is a ghost in your machine,
it's just something to think about.
