Subject: System/Bandwidth requirements for RealServer
Our college is considering using RealServer to host audio/video feeds for
online courses. I would
like to check out recommendations from those actually using the product
(rather than what the
marketing drones say I need) vis a vis server hardware and available bandwidth.
Here's the box we'd like to run it on:
HP NetServer LH 3, PIII-500/100,
768 MB RAM,
NetRAID[3] 16MB RAID Controller
3 9.1GB Ultra2, 10K rpm drives
Linux 2.2
We plan to also run WebCT and/or BlackBoard (online courseware) on the same
box with maybe a dozen
or so classes to start with. Is that enough hardware?
We have T-1 access to the internet. Is that enough bandwidth to cover
moderate usage, or are we
going to clog our pipe?
I don't have hard data on how many feeds we're talking about, or how big
they'll be. I realize
that a precise estimate of bandwidth utilization will depend upon this, but
our users made the
request without making any attempt to estimate real usage, and of course it
has to be ordered by the
end of next week. I'm trying to get a feel for whether or not I should
recommend that they go
through with the order or recommend waiting until we upgrade our hardware
and/or bandwidth.
I appreciate your time and assistance, and if there's some FM I need to R
please let me know.
