Yes, I've considered that.  However, .. I recently learned that there's no
way to fade in/out the audio portion of the video using SMIL, .. so I've
since abandoned the idea altogether.

I don't know about audio, but have you tried placing a RealPix region on
top of the video region?  With this you might be able to fade out the
Pix region from black to transparent, and thus revealing the video as if
it were fading in.
