But if you put all the files inside a

set of tags in the SMIL file, the onClipClosed() doesn't receive a callback
between successive clips.  And without this you don't be prebuffering on all
of your clips.  So is there a way to make what I mention above work?

Answer is yes on all counts below.

This should be enough detail in combination to setup what you want to
do. Basically, I think you use the onClipClosed() method to be called
back at the end of each media file.
