I suspect that the problem is that this error message is incorrect.
I telnetted into yahoo's smtp server, and it does accept AUTH PLAIN
I couldn't take it any further as I don't have a yahoo account.
How about you checking that your userid and password are set up correctly by
r: debase (a bunch of gibberish) ; the encoded string from above
dehex r
and you should see
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@password
