Dear Editor,

"Heaven help us" would be a more appropriate beginning to John Howard's
proposed Preamble.

Heaven help us overcome the folly of a Prime Minister who does not
understand that a Preamble which is not acceptable to all stakeholders at
the outset will not survive for long into the 21st Century.

Heaven help us overcome the failure of the Howard Government to realise
that Australia's First Peoples must be treated as respected cultural
partners in key ritual documents as well as in domestic and international
forums.

John Howard should look very carefully at what happened to his
Country-Liberal Party colleague Shane Stone, the former Chief Minister in
the Northern Territory. Party room rivals, er, mates, allowed him enough
rope for his solo attempt to crash through constitutional reform. Then,
heaven help us, they hung him.

Yours faithfully,

Bruce Reyburn
