Republic submissions close
 today
 Friday 16 April, 1999 (11:44am AEST)

Today is the last day people can submit their views on the
Federal Government's draft legislation which paves the
way for Australia to become a republic.

The bill allows for public nominations for a president,
while the final decision would be made by a two-thirds
 majority of parliament.

A referendum on whether Australia will become a
republic will be held in November.
