Senate passes Internet
 regulation Bill
 Wednesday 26 May, 1999 (12:56pm AEST)

The Senate has passed the Federal Government's
legislation to control offensive material on the Internet.

The Bill was passed with the support of both Independent
 Senators.

It allows the Australian Broadcasting Authority to order
the removal or blocking of pornographic, violent, or
other offensive Internet sites, newsgroups and databases.

Labor, the Democrats and Greens voted against the Bill,
after they failed to amend key elements of it.
