Insurers set to charge GST
 from August this year
 Monday 21 June, 1999 (6:40pm AEST)

The Insurance Council of Australia is to advise its
members to charge a goods and services tax on premiums
 from August.

The charge is expected to be at least 5 per cent of current
 premiums.

The Government has already insisted that a GST charged
now for services provided after July next year, should not
be as high as 10 per cent.

The council says it will be up to individual companies to
decide the types of premiums to incur a GST before the
legislation is passed, and how it will be charged.
