Until 6 a.m. Thursday, some 38,897 East Timorese refugees had taken shelter in public facilities in Atambua district. Atambua, located 28 km from NTT'a border with East Timor, had a native population of 12,000. District military commander Lt Col Sigit expressed concern over the continuing flow of East Timorese refugees. He also worried that members of pro-integration groups like Aitarak, Red-and-White Iron (BMP) and Integration Red would take revenge on pro-independence refugees who had also taken refuge in Atambua and other parts of NTT. The refugees were short of food while a numebr of them were suffering from fever and diarrhoea. The International Red Cross along with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) have provided 5,000 blankets and mats for the benefit of the refugees in Atambua and other palces.
