Mr Little, who will help promote Aboriginal literacy under the scheme, said he hoped it would stop Aboriginal kids getting into trouble in the first place. He echoed comments made earlier by Prime Minister John Howard on morning radio that tackling indigenous disadvantage was more important than overturning the controversial laws. He agreed that it was 'maybe slightly' more important because 'had this been happening earlier in Australia's history then it would have curtailed the situations that are developing,' Mr Little told AAP. 'People that are getting into situations with the law are restless and they just want to contribute, but if they feel that their hands are tied and can't express themselves then idle time becomes the devil's time. 'It means they get into trouble to try and satisfy themselves where there is no opportunity to express themselves.'
