ABC News Wed, 29 Mar 2000 19:19 AEST Democrats say indigenous education program an 'embarrassment' The Australian Democrats have attacked a plan designed to lift indigenous literacy and numeracy, as a "national embarrassment". The Federal Government has launched a $27 million program to improve teaching standards, school retention rates, access to schooling, and the health of indigenous people. But the Democrats say the money has all been announced before, and it equates to less than $1 million a year for each state and territory. Democrats Senator Lyn Allison says the government has to change its whole way of thinking if it wants to address schooling in indigenous communities. "They're not flexible enough to meet the needs of those populations," she said. "We need to look at ways in which we can use teachers in a different way. "We have to acknowledge that in remote areas even things like seasons can affect the length of time that a student can spend in a school." © 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- _________________________________ Truth is a pathless land. --- Krishnamurti ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
