I think you are right - the next few days will be interesting in light of
what they have said - a Howardspeak avalanche.
This latest abomination (the stolen generation is exaggerated) must be the
last straw for this dirty little government. Did anyone see Jocelyn Newman
on Sunday this morning defending it? A truly disgraceful performance -
including the ultimate gutter comment that to protest is 'UnAustralian'. As
one response had it: to protest at the Olympics is unAustralian; to take
children isn't.
I refuse to believe they can survive this. Surely the truth/troops will
rally and hunt down their every word and their every attempt to back away
from it. Already the denial has begun, Herron was quoted today, and the fix
is in - "we didn't really mean it didn't happen, we just don't want to
exaggerate it." The code is inescapable and perfectly legible for anyone
who has eyes to see - you make the outrageous but deniable statement; it
does its subtle work, speaks to the bigots and the waverers, informs them
that it is okay not to care too much about this issue; you clam up and blame
extremists for misinterpreting your innocent, well-meant comment. You wait
for the protest and the more violent and virulent it is, the better, because
then you can point to their unreasonableness and their unAustralianess.
