Broadcaster suspended over
  outburst

  21may00

  RADIO 2GB has suspended controversial
broadcaster Ron Casey after he attacked
Aborigines as a lazy race on air yesterday
  morning.

Casey was conducting a live interview when he
  said Aborigines were "disadvantaged because
they won't get off their black arses and do
  some work".

2GB chief executive George Buschman told The
Sunday Telegraph that he ordered Casey's
  immediate suspension.

He said the veteran broadcaster knew of the station's "zero tolerance"
policy but
  had chosen to ignore it.

"Ron got very heated and made some derogatory remarks about the
Aboriginal
race," a seething Mr Buschman said.

"I would have thought a broadcaster with his experience would have
understood
we would deal swiftly with any breaches of this nature."

The task of suspending Casey fell to program director Mike Jeffreys.

Station management will meet Casey tomorrow morning but he is unlikely
to take
his place behind the microphone again.

"I'm not sure we're putting him back on," Mr Buschman said. "At this
point in
time, I doubt he'll be back on the air."

It is the third time 2GB has sacked Casey and the fourth time he has
made racist
comments on air under the station's call sign.

Casey also hit national headlines in 1992 when he and entertainer
Normie Rowe
were involved in a notorious live-to-air punch up on the Midday Show.

Casey had been interviewing Sydney Morning Herald journalist David
Marr after an
article was published under his name yesterday suggesting racism
against
  Aborigines was rife in Australia.

Casey opened by saying he was at a loss to understand how "racism has
won the
  day".

The broadcaster became enraged when Mr Marr accused his program of
telling "lies
about Aborigines" and "nonsense about blaming the whole Aboriginal
race".

Mr Marr said the Prime Minister had very honestly recognised that
Aborigines were
the most disadvantaged in the community, at which point Casey snapped
and
  jumped in.

The station cut immediately to advertisements before the interview
resumed, with
  Casey still on the air.

Mr Buschman said Casey had a "track record" of similar outbursts and
program
producer Brian Carlton had hit the "dump" button at the first sign of
trouble.

But he had either been too slow or there was a technical glitch, and
the comments
  went to air.

"The dump button was activated but whether it was too late or there
was a
technical fault is not clear," Mr Buschman said. "But regardless,
(Casey's) got to
  be a little more courteous."
